How do you get someone to stop smoking at work?

I started a new job a month ago. I was so happy because I finally got decent pay and health insurance. Unfortunately, this was too good to be true. One of my coworkers smokes in the office. I have asthma and am allergic to cigarette smoke. Everytime she lights one up, I start smothering. I told my boss in person about my health condition and all he said he'd do is put up automatic door closers on the doors around her (she smokes in the doorway of the building so she can stay by the phone). Well, about 2 or 3 weeks went by, and he'd still not put anything up. I decided to email him and tell him again. I asked him if he could ban smoking indoors completely. Well, finally he decides to put those automatic door closers on there. But guess what, she props her door open! It's terrible!

Anyway, have any of you dealt with smokers at work. How do you get someone to stop. The bad thing is, my boss is a smoker too! So he doesn't care! If they don't stop, I'm going to have to find another job!
Well, about speaking to her directly. She can be very mean. She was very ugly to me at first, and then someone talked to her for me, and now she's nice. I don't know how she'd react if I told her to stop.
The reason she smokes in the doorway is because she's a dispatcher. If she goes outside completely, she'll miss a call or something on the radio.
I did talk to my boss. He's a smoker as well and does not care about my condition. Also, if I cause a big stink about this, everyone is going to dislike me because the majority of people there seem to smoke. The other non-smokers are medics and get to get away. I'm an office person and always have to be there. Eh, it sucks. :(

Well most of the time smokers are the majority so the only way you can combat it is to sit down with your boss and have a serious conversation about your medical problem, but before you do, make sure you are serious about it. Dont talk to him if it "bothers" or "annoys" you. Talk to him if your health is at serious risk.

Also, make sure you are creating a paper trail. Keep those emails and make copies. Check out your local laws. You could probably sue the living hell out of these people. There isnt supposed to be smoking in the workplace, its probably against building codes or something, i dont know. It just depends on your area.

How to you get someone to stop smoking when they always smoking?

my dad is always smoking what should i do to get him to stop smoking should i hide his cigerates?

You can't stop someone from smoking. It is something they have to decide on their own. It takes a lot of will power and you have to have your mind set to it. They have to do it for themselves and not anyone else. The best thing you could do is support him if he decides to quit. I went to the Doctor to see what it takes to quit and he told me I would have to be away from all cigarettes, smokers and ash trays for at least 10 days (if it was cold turkey). The patch really worked for me sister, but it was still really hard for her. She just wanted to quit soooo bad that she made it through. Cigarettes are just as addicting as heroin.

How to get someone to realize they need to stop smoking?

I have read the statistics of smoking cigarettes, but realize that people who smoke have to quit on their own. My friend is about to become a dad and am worried about his health and how it will effect the baby, even though he smokes outside, away from everybody around him. He's tried to quit but can't. I know it is difficult but how can I get him to realize that he should stop smoking?

Instructions

1.
Step 1

Avoid nagging, preaching or scolding to prevent hurt feelings, irritation and increased stress, all of which may cause the smoker to turn to a cigarette for comfort.
2.
Step 2

Remind the smoker how proud you are of him and celebrate milestones along with the smoker. This will help the smoker feel supported and encourage him to remain smoke-free.
3.
Step 3

Offer the quitter tools to help her quit, such as chewing gum, hard candy, snacks and water.
4.
Step 4

Distract the smoker from wanting a cigarette by getting him out of the house or away from places that trigger the desire for a cigarette. Go for a walk, see a movie or go shopping.
5.
Step 5

Respect the smoker's wishes and avoid calling or dropping by uninvited. Grumpiness and irritability are symptoms of nicotine withdrawal and the smoker may desire to spend some time alone.
6.
Step 6

Do not talk down to the smoker, even if you successfully quit in the past. The last thing a person wants to hear when quitting smoking is how easy it was for someone else. Be encouraging and offer support and understanding.
7.
Step 7

Avoid pointing out any weight the smoker may gain while quitting. According to Brown University, some smokers gain a considerable amount of weight during and following a quit, but most of that weight eventually falls off.
8.
Step 8

Prepare yourself for dealing with the smoker's withdrawal symptoms. Symptoms such as trouble sleeping, irritability, restlessness, forgetfulness and anxiety can be upsetting for both the person trying to quit and everyone else around her. Remember that these symptoms will pass with time and do not take any of them personally.
9.
Step 9

Praise the smoker for trying to quit, even if he has a relapse. According to the American Cancer Society, most smokers try to quit five to seven times before they are successful. A relapse should be seen as practice for a successful quit in the future, not as a failure. Do not make the smoker feel guilty for relapsing.
10.
Step 10

If you smoke, hide your cigarettes, lighters, ashtrays and anything else that may be a trigger for the smoker. Smoke outside and never offer a cigarette to someone attempting to quit smoking, even as a joke.

What is the best way to convince someone to stop smoking?

well my sister smokes(like a chimney!)and i love her dearly i would just die if anything happened to her(no joke)so i know smoking is really bad for you and stuff because it damages your lungs and so,but she just won't listen to me what can i do/say to convince her to stop smoking?!?!

thanks in advance and happy new year!

Both my in laws were 4 packs a day smokers. I couldn't go in their house for 5 minutes without coughing violently.

When my mother in law finally was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer (stage 4 means no hope left in terms of cancer) while she went through treatment to try to extend her life, my father in law quit so she wouldn't be exposed to more smoke. But when she died in short time, he went right back to smoking at the same rate.

All smokers die a smoking death. Make sure you share this with your sister.

One of my neighbors died in his 70's and had known him to be healthy and robust and always cheerful. When I consoled his widow I asked if he had been sick and sure enough he had lung cancer. I was rather shocked since I had known them a long time and never known either to smoke so I asked how he got that. She said they both used to smoke and stopped in the early 70's as soon as it came out that smoking could kill you, but it was too late for him and 30 years later his cancer from it finally developed and he died.

So all that nonsense about for every 10 years you haven't smoked your risk of a smoking death going down decreases is nonsense. Your sister is PLANNING her death and I would treat it as seriously as her writing a suicide note.

And do not ever go around her when she's smoking because the effects to you are just as serious.

How to make someone stop smoking when they have cancer?

My friend went to the doctor recently, and they found traces of cancer in his blood. However, he doesn't want to stop smoking. Talking to him won't help because he's given up on life. He hasn't told his parents yet, and making him feel guilty doesn't work. How do I stop him?

You CANT make someone else stop. You just cant do it. He has to want to. And even with cancer, it his body and his choice.

While a kiss is always nice, and sex is real nice too, neither would work. (And what are you going to do when you realize your person smokes a pack a day?) The desire for a cigarette is uncommonly strong. The desire to quit has to come from the smoker, not those who care about him or her. Nothing you do for every cigarette s/he forgoes is going to take the place of that cigarette.

What you can do is encourage and support, offering positive reinforcement, and not becoming upset when and if they backslide, fail, or quit trying. It’s that difficult.
