Are the smoking health effects exaggerated?
Horror!!!!!

I know it's harmful but sometimes I think that people exaggerate smoking effects. My dad has been smoking for 20 years and he doesn't have any health problems. I know lots of people who have been smoking all their lives but never had smoking related illnesses.

Smoking effects on anesthesia with cigarettes?
We are gentlemen!

I am having a colonoscopy in two days and was wondering the effects smoking will cause with the anesthesia.

You will be fine. Colonoscopy is done with what is called "monitored anesthesia care", which means while you get anesthesia you are still breathing on your own. General anesthesia is when a breathing tube is placed in your throat. None of the anesthetic agents interact with nicotine or cause problems like that. The biggest problem with cigarette smoking is the overall effect on your lungs. After general anesthesia, in order to avoid pneumonia it is important to cough and deep breathe to clear secretions from the lungs. This is more difficult for smokers- they have more secretions and a harder time clearing them, thus the risk of pneumonia is increased. That said- for a colonoscopy you should be fine.

And as a side note- good for you for getting your scope! Prevention is key for colorectal cancer.

Does Anyone Know The Effects Smoking Marijuana While Pregnant Will Have On The Baby, If Any?
Urban relaxation

This is a tough subject because since marijuana is illegal (in most places) that there is no offfcial government/medical study on the effects of marijuana smoking on the fetus.

I am not asking for opinions, or whether or not you think it is a good idea but what could you expect to possibly happen if you take in marijuana while pregnant?

There are no effects other than the effects of cigarette smoke. I know this,I did my research into it at one point in time. The only real risk that's been found is possible low birthweight. I don't smoke anymore, but I know some women that smoked the whole time they were pregnant, their kids were fine. My mom smoked with me,I'm fine. I've not heard of it/found TRUE information on anything but the effects of cigarette smoke, which still isn't good, but yea, that's all they've found. It's unclear if there's anything else. I know they drug test the baby when it's born, and if it's found in their system, they remove the child from the mother. Another thing-you opened a can of worms on here, and half these people have NO idea what they're speaking about. Most studies are done where there are other things that have an effect. Marijuana is a NONCHEMICAL ADDICTING substance,so how they say withdrawl can happen is beyond me.

  • What are the effects of smoking bans? - Statistical Modeling ...

Apropos your recent posting of the Churchill/Roosevelt poster, there has been a bit of a controversy over the effect of smoking bans in terms of heart attack rates. Recent bans in the UK have given researchers some plausible "experiments" to study the effect on a larger scale than the famous "Helena Montana" study. For example, this .

On the other hand, when looking for info about this to follow up your poster I found a variety of usually rather obviously biased articles such as this one . But that's no reason to ignore a point of view if it can be backed up by data. The second link at least attempts (poorly) to display some data which suggests that an existing downward trend could be responsible for the reductions, and if poorly done the statistical research could have missed this.
