Millions for "smoking cessation programs" to lessen the medical costs? I thought that was why they were hiking the taxes? And how is this a Stimulus for the economy?
You could almost say the same thing about the millions to research climate change. How does that result in good jobs for the "failing" middle class? Not sure. It does further the global warming agenda, though.
I do find that the benefits of fewer smokers won't be felt for years, and by then they'll perhaps be suffering from smoking-related illnesses and the benefit may very well cancel itself out.

This is my second attempt this year, quit for 2 months to get into better health because we wanted to get pregant, I got pregnant but miscarried, then started back to smoking. Now 2 weeks back smoking my chest hurts all the time and I have a terrible cough. I want to quit but I need support, my husband is a smoke and will not give it up.
I'm 50 yrs of age smoked between 10 to 20 a day, for the last 35 yrs. given up more times than i can remember,(2&1/2 yrs once).had a stroke a couple of months ago.given up on DR's orders .it's hard but now i have a good incentive(near death expereance does that) there are so many products out there to help , don't try cold turkey as this hardly works .but at the end of the day only you can muster the will power to do it.try web sites and listen to others who have done it . get as many people in your corner for help. good luck kid

I think smokers are less likely to quit in such stressful time and I wish I had some habit to reduce the stress...maybe a smokers training program?
Anyway...I thought the tobacco taxes and part of the tobacco liability concessions were supposed to pay for this kind of thing. Also, insurance companies offer the nicoderm patch, prescriptions, and behavior modification programs for stopping...wtf?
I am all for people to be healthy and to stop smoking...but as part of the job stimulus package???
Why not take out those Arts millions and get Caroline to raise money for them? I thought we were trying to jump start the economy in these "perilous" times.
I agree that previous spending was reckless...it is just that now I have so little faith in the lawmakers (since they acted like the 3 Stooges and "who's on first?" in the last bailout. I am reading the details for the first time in the light that there is nobody looking out for me now. Kind of like if you were a passenger in a speeding car and the driver has slumped over the wheel drunk...you would suddenly get very interested in steering. Since I lost my job on Nov 5, I am particularly interested in the job creation details on this one since there won't likely be another one. I wish they would put this to a vote and we could pick the programs we think would work. The only jobs I see being created are for the Trade Unions, an industry in which jobs are not being lost.
You bring up some good points. Why is "stimulus" money going to non-stimulus areas? It's called PORK. Lawmakers but these types of things in their proposals and will only sign off if their individual cause is kept in the Bill.
This stimulus plan also gives money away to MANY lobbyist groups. In the last stimulus we lost this company 1 TRILLION dollars and little to no progress was made. In fact 70% of the money is unaccounted for--gone!
Why do they think that doing this again is going to have any better effects? The fact is that the government is building us a debt so huge that our grandchildren will be paying it back. Frankly I'm disgusted!

Cigarette smoking is the single most preventable cause of premature death in the United States. Each year, one in every five deaths, (about 443,000 in total) is smoking related. The health risks associated with smoking translate into annual healthcare costs of more than $96 billion, with costs associated with second hand smoking averaging $10 billion. Interestingly, 70% of the 43.4 million U.S. adult smokers report that they want to quit completely and more than 40% try to quit each year. However, smoking cessation is extremely difficult; in fact, only about 4% – 7% of people are able to remain smoke free for six months on any given attempt. These success rates dramatically increase to...
