Skinnyman is a legend in the UK HipHop scene. This is going out to all smokers. Even though I don#39;t smoke, I#39;m feeling this joint.
The smoking ban affects both businesses and their customers. Isn't the smoking ban one sided (anti-smoking advocates are happy that there is a ban).
The tobacco industry didn't force people to smoke. And the establishments didn't force non-smokers to go into their businesses where smokers are.
They should relax the ban on some businesses (bars and nightclubs, hotel rooms, etc). This is not about whos right or wrong, it's about equality.
Non-smokers and smokers both have rights to their personal choices.
I'm not in favor of smoking bans unless it is a government building. I believe that a private business owner should have the freedom to decide whether he/she will allow smoking or not.
But I also believe that people need to be informed so that they can make the right decision for them. So, all businesses that allow smoking should be required to post it clearly on their doors so that people can make an informed decision whether to do their private business there or not.
A private business is private. They should have the right to cater to whatever population they choose. If a non-smoker only wants to go to smoke-free businesses, they can choose to do that. If a smoker wants to go to businesses that allow smoking, they should have the freedom to do that. A smoking customer should not be allowed to dictate to a private business owner whether they allow smoking and a non-smoking customer should not be allowed to dictate to a private business owner that they ban smoking.
We have a smoking ban in my state. I think it's pitiful that when a private club like the VFW cannot allow their smoking members to smoke in their private club. The club wants to allow smoking but my state government won't let them.
The designated area idea doesn't seem to work. Many non-smokers are under the impression that if they faintly smell the odor of cigarettes that they will drop dead from lung cancer. There are actually people who think they are going to die because their neighbor in the apartment two doors down smokes and it might drift through the windows. People have really gone off the deep end on this stuff.
I live in Tennessee and our smoking ban comes into effect on October 1st of 2007, that is this Monday.
I have read that there are people who believe it is an attempt to legislate morality. In my opinion it would only be an attempt to legislate morality if it was an all encompassing ban on smoking like during the prohibition of alcohol. Since it doesn't ban smoking outdoors or in ones own private spaces then it is only an attempt to preserve overall public health rather than an attempt to create a moral edict. What are your thoughts?
By the way I'm a non-smoker.
since when has
smoking' become a matter of
morality?"
It seems more, to be a matter of public health concerns.
I'm writing a persuasive essay on the issue of a smoking ban (pro). It has to be a 5 paragraph essay with three body paragraphs each containing a different reason or main point supporting the thesis. I'm not sure what my different body paragraph ideas should be...
I want to focus on the dangers of second hand smoke and how a smoking ban is shown to decrease levels of nicotine in the air, and incorporate my research into the essay.
Help?
Research, research, research. Formulate a thesis from the research, then divide your essay into two parts: First part should be two paragraphs devoted to why second hand smoke is bad. Second part should be two paragraphs devoted to why banning smoking is good.
Last paragraph should be a restating of your thesis and a declaration of your conclusions.
Try to keep to parallel construction, i.e., after writing about the bad things, show point by point why smoking is bad and should be banned.
Caution: Be certain to include a discussion of why segregating smokers is not good enough.
I hope this helps.
I know in some areas you can't smoke in restaurants, beaches, etc. However, smokers can still smoke outdoors. But last time I checked, the general public still walks around outdoors, so shouldn't a public smoking ban include all outdoor areas as well except for private residences?
I'm trying to resolve the slight contradiction of banning public smoking. The streets are part of the public, but yet smokers can still smoke there despite the fact that nonsmokers are also walking around on the streets.
Nobody has ever suggested a total ban on public smoking, or at least nowhere I've heard of.
A public smoking ban restricts smoking to designated areas or situations, that's all.

Smoking ban forum discusses air filtration | Political Fix | STLtoday
Air filtration systems to curb second-hand smoke got an airing Monday night.
Bill Hannegan , a major opponent of banning smoking in indoor public places, suggested that air filtration systems could be alternative. He and St. Louis County Councilwoman Barbara Fraser , D-University City, the sponsor of the ban on the Nov. 3 St. Louis County ballot, spoke at a forum of the Clayton Chamber of Commerce.
Effective air filtration systems “produce air cleaner than outdoor air,” Hannegan said. The filtration systems, Fraser said, “get at the issue of smell, but are not effective in eliminating fine particle concentrations and gases.”
Fraser said her smoking ban would protect residents, including those with asthma and other conditions that make people sensitive to second-hand smoke.
