Smoking is bad for you, yes. It causes cancer, and so does second hand smoke; however, alcohol abuse has been attributed to domestic violence, accidental murders/manslaughter, car accidents, hit-and-runs, destruction of properties, financial debts, liver problems, and various other health issues, including death. So why the heavy anti-smoking sentiment, and not much public outcry against alcohol abuse?
We already tried a constitutional amendment prohibiting alcohol. It led to even more crime, especially violent crimes. Anti-tobacco legislation has more public support because people are getting filthy rich on the lawsuits without resorting to violence and everybody else is getting MY f-in $$ (thru sin taxes) because I smoke (which actually affects nobody but me). But im not gonna pick up a tommy gun over it so nobody cares. That's the difference.
very nice campaign against smoking^^
There has been some controversy whether or not the Denver Police should enforce the laws against Marijuana smoking and Prostitution during the Democratic Convention.
Should the Denver Police ignore those violations during the Democratic Convention?
I think wiemercats, D_Yon, and aeriol7 are about right. If anything it would be politically embarrassing for anything to happen that gives the impression of the Democrats being no values hedonists. Odds are the Convention organizers have selected Denver in part for the ability of the local authorities to deal with the indiscreet, discreetly.
All this falls into the category of contemporary business as usual image control.
So, if you're going to San Francisco put some flowers in your hair; but if you're going to Denver bring your own stash, as well as your mistress, or your wife, if you can stand her.
Wish2Travel, how are either Marijuana possession or prostitution victimless crimes? You don't call potheads victims? You think these people would be the same way without weed?
And on prostitution, I know alot of people think it's a lifestyle, or dare we say it, a career choice. But just, what do you think pimps do? Don't tell me you buy into that they provide a secure and safe working environment for the hookers bull? At the least, since when do hookers suck at providing their own safety (at least any worse than the pimps do)?
I have to write a persuasive reasearch paper against smoking and it has to have at least 3 different points. So if anyone has any ideas I'm listening.
I think the most important point against smoking is related to health issues.
First of all, smoking is linked to several different tipes of cancer, obviously including lung cancer but also breast, gastrointestinal, and lymphatic/blood cancers.
Smoking also affects the lung directly, causing a medical condition called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), in the forms of either Chronic Bronchitis or Emphysema. COPD is also linked to cardiovascular disease, including congestive heart failure.
Smoking is also a socially despicable condition (that's why more and more places are smoke-free). Besides the repulsive smell, it stains the teeth, and the fumes and smoke also affect non-smokers by "passive smoking".
Smoking is expensive in the short and long terms; and the price of tobacco keeps rising. If you take the money of all the packs smoked by a heavy smoker (2 packs a day) in a 5 year period, you could buy a new car every 5 years. Do the math: $5 a pack, smoking 2 a day= $10 a day; in 365 days per year= $3650, times 5= $18,250. Price of a brand new Honda Civic sedan= $15,010 (with $3000 extra to spend!)
What are some major Canadian laws against smoking like how people can't smoke indoors in many places nowadays. I don't care if they are municipal, provincial, or federal, just tell me what they are. Thanks.
Smoking in indoor workplaces and public places is banned in most provinces and at federally regulated buildings.
* Parliament has amended the current ban on smoking in the federal government and federally regulated businesses. As a result of the amendment, smoking rooms will be disallowed. This change will notably affect places such as airports.[citation needed]
By province (East to West):
* Newfoundland and Labrador: smoking has been banned in all public places, including bars and bingo halls, since 2005 under the province's Smoke-Free Environment Act.
* Prince Edward Island has banned smoking in public places and workplaces since 2003. Ventilated smoking rooms are allowed, however, but food cannot be served in them.
* Nova Scotia: since 1 December 2006, smoking is banned in public places, with the exception of special rooms in nursing homes and care facilities. Tobacco products cannot be displayed prominently in stores. Since April 1, 2008, smoking in a car with passengers under 19 inside is illegal in Nova Scotia.
* New Brunswick has banned smoking in all public areas since October 2004 and does not allow specially ventilated rooms.
* Quebec will eliminate designated smoking rooms and retail tobacco displays by May 31, 2008. There has been a comprehensive ban on smoking in public places, including bars and restaurants, since 2006.
* Ontario will ban retail displays of tobacco in 2008. Since 2006, all workspaces and enclosed spaces open to the public ban smoking.
* Manitoba's Non-Smoker's Health Protection Act has banned all smoking in public spaces since October 2004. Non-smoking areas, or specially ventilated rooms, are not allowed in bars and restaurants.
* Saskatchewan's reinstated 'shower curtain law' (2005) requires shop owners to keep tobacco sales out of sight. There are fines of up to $10 000 for violation of the Tobacco Control Act which bans smoking in all public areas, indoor and outdoor, including clubs for veterans.
* Alberta has had a public smoking ban since 1 January 2008. The City of Calgary has legislated that bars and restaurants must be smoke free (since 2007); in the city of Edmonton there has been a smoking ban since 2005.
* British Columbia's smoking ban, passed in March 2007, bans smoking in all public spaces such as restaurants, pubs and private clubs, offices, malls, conference centres, sports arenas, community halls, government buildings and schools.
By territory (East to West):
* Nunavut has banned smoking in public spaces since May 1, 2004, including bars.
* The Northwest Territories banned smoking as of May 1, 2004, in all public places and workplaces, including restaurants, bars, bingo and bowling facilities, and casinos.
* The Yukon is the last region to introduce a ban, and the proposed bill, Yukon Bill 104, passed its first two readings in May 2007. It has yet to pass, but if passed, would take effect in June 2008.
* Whitehorse banned as of January 2005 in all indoor public places, including restaurants and bars. Ventilated smoking rooms and certain bars are exempt from Whitehorse's ban.
I have to do a project for school, a video project against smoking so i need a song that is against smoking or tobacco.does any one no any?
Tobacco is a dirty weed.....I like it
It has no cause or useful need..I like it
It makes you thin; it makes you lean
It takes the hair right off your bean
It's the worst darn stuff I've ever seen
I like it.
Also: From Coughen to Coffin with camels.
A disease that's made for us mammals
But some people love it
And feel they're above it.
Like a dentist loves the enamels.

WKSU News: Appeals court rules against state in smoking ban ...
An appeals court in Toledo has ruled against the state over the way it has been enforcing the statewide smoking ban. Health departments levy fines on business owners if someone smokes in their establishments. But an attorney for a Toledo bar, Maurice Thompson, says that's not in accordance with the statewide law. Thompson says the law says a business can only be fined if it permits smoking. He says in many cases, the bars are being fines for non-compliance are doing what they should be doing.
Thompson says the fines can cost businesses thousands of dollars. The Ohio Attorney General's office would not comment on the ruling. However, a spokeswoman for the office says the decision further clarifies the burden of proof. Kim Kowalski says the state is in the process of discussion the next steps it will take with the Ohio Health Department. The decision could possibly be appealed to the Ohio Supreme Court.
