I quit smoking last april and have gained about ten pounds since then. I wasnt heavy to begin with but I dont want my weight to creep up on me. I used to be able to lose 10 pounds easy now it seems harder. Any ideas why?
the simple answer:
You can now taste the food. As such, you tend to enjoy it more hence eating more.
As well, psychologically you need to do something with your hands and we tend to eat something small that we can hold in our fingers (so once again eating more).
Exerercise more. When you would take a smoke break before spend this time on a brisk walk instead. This will burn off the calories of the extra food you are taking in due to quitting smoking.
Congrats on quitting. If I could only join you in your amazing feat :)
For some people it is very hard to stop smoking. In this video experts from the Mayo Clinic explain why. The video illustrates the way in which ...
A co-worker said her doctor prescribed Welbutrin to her because she is trying to quit smoking. I aked her why, but she said, "I don't know." I think I would of had to ask, but thats just me. It has me wondering why. Anyone know?
Wellbutrin was given to depressed people and it was found that some of the smokers also stopped as a side effect. So the drug maker marketed a new product now called Zyban.
Zyban or Wellbutrin are SSRs, meaning - they are a class of drugs dealing with selective serontonin re-uptake. It is designed to 'top up' the serontonin supply, which act on the brain's neuro pathways triggering a supply of 'mood changing' chemicals... similar to the reaction smokers get from nicotine.
Zyban has side effects, some serious and occaisionally fatal, and it does not help with the habitual or psychological addiction to smoking, which are very important. See 'Ways to Stop Smoking,' at the website below.

Smoking is bad for your health. We all know this. But so is being overweight. Yet it is socially acceptable for smokers to be nagged at, harassed and otherwise given a hard time to try and get them to quit, but its NOT ok to harass an overweight person who is chowing down on a large Big Mac meal with a thickshake and a sundae!! Why can't we tell them to excercise, eat healthy, and actually take care of themselves?
You don't need to harass them but instead just kinda look at them and laugh a little bit but only if they're really fat, that should do the trick

I quit smoking almost a year ago, but now I feel worse then I did when I smoked. My blood pressure has gone up. Along with other minor issues. Why is this?
You may still be having withdrawal symptoms. Think of it as being a drug addict in recovery. Nicotine is an addictive drug. Plus quitting is great, but what is your lifestyle now. If you do not exercise and eat right, quitting smoking just saves you money. Go see a doctor to get a clean bill of health and start doing things that will help you be even more healthy. And congratulations for quitting...it is one of the hardest things you can do.
But people like George Burns smoked all the way up to 100yrs old. Should I quit now and take my chances or just keep smoking?
Smoker for 30yrs.
There are many advantages to quitting smoking.
Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
