My brand of cigarettes just went up $7.00 a carton and will go up another $6.20 April 1st for the new tax. I am done with cigarettes! Have a doctor's appointment to get Chantix.
Besides why should I as a smoker pay for someone else's child health care? I take care of my own already.
If more people quit smoking how will they pay for the enormous cost?
I am going to quit for sure. I think it is absolutely ridiculous. I feel like the government is dictating what people should do because of the very high increase. I am not even quitting because of the price, I am quitting out of pure principle that I do not want the government to touch a penny of mine because of this tax.
I think a lot of smoker's will finally wise up and plan to quit. There will probably be some people who will not quit but I hope at lease 30 percent decide to quit. I think the government made a big mistake on raising cigarettes this much. Some would say that it will save money in the long run because of health problems but, you could debate that forever. For example, you could say that the government should tax fast food because it could save money in the long run.
The government is going to hurt more business because of this, something which is probably not a good idea now. The government is just going to find something else to tax after they find out this does not work and probably think why they did this to smokers in the first place. So come on anti-smokers, TELL ME HOW WRONG I AM AND GIVE ME A THUMBS DOWN!!!!
Welcome to the Dr Chris Steele MBE 10 Point Quit Smoking Plan - Step 1. Step 1 is simple but important. Choose a QUIT DAY. This is the day you ...
I tried cold turkey, I tried nicotine patches and gum. I couldn't make it a single day without smoking. So I counted exactly how many I smoke each day, and I got between 30 and 35. So, for the last 5 days, I've been smoking exactly 29, and I feel fine. I plan to cut down by one cigarette a day per week, until I'm done. So it will take 29 weeks to quit, that's better than another 12 years, right? Does this plan make sense to anyone but me?
itll work as much as you can make it work. i think it sounds like a plan but you have to stick to the plan. if you have blue cross/blue shield, you can enroll in the quit the nic program and get free chantix and support through them. tried it but i was unable to tolerate the chantix.
once this new cigarette tax goes through. Do you feel smokers are being targeted, and once the tobacco industry goes out of business who do you think the next target will be, maybe the alcohol industry?

I don't agree with your statement about alcohol, my uncle, my father and my husband were all alchoholics and believe me the effects are harmful to everyone around them, and in the end it destroys their health and their lives along with the lives of everyone around them.
I'm a smoker, but I roll my own because I can't afford to buy the name brand, but once this new tax goes into place I won't even be able to afford to roll them so I'm pretty much forced to quit. I think if the government is going to tax people for doing things that are bad for their health they need to tax everything that has negative side effects, that includes caffeine, sugar, fast food, alchohol, any form of medications that have warning labels. How can anyone feel singling out one specific group is justifiable?
Cigarette smoking has been targeted, you can see the negative effects in just about every freedom people are given in this country, but freedom is the issue here, not your health. Driving a car pollutes the air more than smokers do, so maybe we should all stop driving cars, or tax people who drive cars so much that they can't afford to drive anymore.
Has anyone even considered that when the price of gas began to skyrocket automotive industries began closing their doors? I'm sure the extra expense put on consumers that drive didn't have anything to do with the fact these industries finally collapsed. The fact is the majority of smokers are at or below the poverty line, and once this new tax goes into effect people will no longer have a choice, whether they are addicted or not, and the result is going to be an enormous loss of sales for the tobacco industry which will most likely drive them out of business. So, when this happens who is going to be the next target? I think it will be the alcohol industry, my husband thinks it will be food, maybe we are both right. The government has to tax somebody in order to find the means to support this failing economy, it is that simple.
BLADESINGER, that is exactly my point, targeting one group until you drive them out of business does not help the economy, there are tons of vices out there, you tax each one a little amount so you don't hurt the industry or the consumer to much, and you still receive the same effect economically, and you don't discriminate against a specific group of people. Why is this so hard to understand?
Sure, let's drive all of them out of business, tobacco, alcohol, fat food, etc. This country really needs more unemployment right now!

I going to help my uncle quit,so I came up with a plan..
*Smoke less cigarattes each days(idk how many he smokes a day,but I am planning to tell him to stop smoking 1 ciggarate every 3 days,is that a good idea?)
*Excersice daily (like 10 minutes)
*Buy the gum that helps you quit
Is that good?
And how can I help him? I know like morally, but like what things can I say to him?
*drink a lot of water
*something to get his head off smoking
any more good suggestions?
1 cig every 3 days isnt gonna work... start off with like 1 cig every 3 hours or sumthin... dont put to much pressure on him because hye might get irritated... baby steps is the key...
i'm planning to quit smoking by my bday which coupla days away only, is it true that i will gain weight? and what's better, to graduallu minimize the cigarettes i smoke daily or to just quit? do the nicotine gums help? any other tips? (I smoke 10 cigarettes a day and i've been smoking for 2.5 years now)
I quit cold turkey over 20 years ago. I did gain some weight initially but with careful eating and exercise it came off easily. There is a temptation to smoke when you are stressed. What helped me is to just take a couple of deep breaths instead of giving into the temptation. Good luck - your lungs will thank you for it!!

Doctor#39;s Word–Tips to Escape the Smoking Trap
Giving up the addictive habit of tobacco is extremely difficult, and Jones’ success depended on the help of a counselor, smoking cessation classes, nicotine replacement patches, and the support of a friend. Here are some things that helped Jones, as well as tips I’ve garnered over the years as a primary care physician.
To succeed at quitting, you first have to decide that this is something you really want to do. Medicine and classes won’t work unless you have made a commitment. In Jones’ case, a graphic video that his counselor played at his first stop smoking class made him resolve to quit. It showed pictures of smokers that he could not forget: a man missing an eye and part of his nose from mouth cancer, and people breathing through tracheotomies – holes that doctors surgically cut in their throats when cancer prevented them from breathing. “You have to be willing to give it your all,” Jones said. “But the pros outweigh the cons.”
