have been smoking for 25 yrs
Congrats on the decision to stop. I quit a year and a half ago after smoking for 17 years and this is how I did it:
I started out with 1 smoke every 30 minutes the first day, every 45 the next day, then every 60....I increased it by 15 minutes everyday until I was up to 16 hours between smokes. Yeah, it took a while, but by the time I got toward the end, I actually forgot to smoke sometimes. Also, I have convinced myself that it's not that I can never ever have another smoke for the rest of my life, but that I'm just choosing not to smoke right now. That way I don't panic at the word "never" and it kind of puts me in the driver's seat instead of the nicotine. Silly, yes, but it works for me. In fact, I did try a couple months ago to smoke one just to see if I had really kicked the habit. Yuck! I can honestly say I don't want to smoke anymore. Plus I smell it on other people and in their homes and cars and it STINKS!
You can do it!
These clips are from the BBC: Horizon documentary series entitled quot;We Love Cigarettesquot;. The advice Allen Carr gives is pretty damn good ...
most of her mates smoke but i dont, she has had a lot of stress in her life in the past month, and sometimes i dont know if she is being honest with me, cos i want her to tell me if she has ever had a cig. i dont know what to do. help...
When one is changing or eliminating a habit only thing the people around them can do is support. This might be by be as simple as just talking to them when an urge comes and they feel the need to satisfy the urge with an old habit. Other things you can do is help her find other things to do ways to cope with not smoking.
Most importantly this is her habit so offering your support is cool but if she declines it step away. As long as the offer is out there she will know you care.
my dad is a chain-smoker, I am going to say bluntly, we don't have a good relationship, so I am honestly, not as such worried about him, and more frustrated about living with him, sure, I don't want him to die, but it's living with him that is the problem
he makes my clothes smell
he makes my hair smell
250,000 people die a year of second hand smoking
he wakes me up in the morning with his sneezing and coughing
he sneezes and coughs at least 10 times an hour, WHICH IS VERY ANNOYING if you're living with it.
he has some nicquitine patches but refuses to use them, when i suggest he does, he flat out tells me to shut up
I have given him a guide to quit smoking book, he doesn't read it.
I've told him how terrible it is for his appearance, his oder and his health, he doesn't react to the things i tell him.
I'm starting to just think the only way he is going to stop is when hes on his death bed with cancer.
As a former smoker I can say Im sorry for what your dad is putting you thru. I quit for my health and my childrens health. And I was tired of getting sick constantly it seemed like.
What you can do is add up how many packs he buys a yr, how much it costs and then show him how much hes spending to get his "fix" we will call it. I have told friends since I quit I wont talk to or be near them if they continue to smoke and a few have quit with help or cold turkey. And we are very close now.
But trying to force someone to quit is just going to make them want to keep smoking more specially if they chain smoke as much as your dad seems to. They need the "drug" to funciton thru the day. Maybe getting him to see in person what a persons lungs look like after chain smoking for 20-30 yrs is a good idea, the sight of the tissue damage could scare him to quiting. But other then that I dont know what to suggest. Keep trying and dont give up. Be a PITA about it and I hope for your health you dont have to live at home much longer and can get out.

I smoke 32 cigars a day. Now i really feel to quit it but i am helpless. Whenever i see someone smoking i feel to. also after food its a habit for me. Is there anyone out who successfully get rid of this habit ? pls guide me. hope it will be very useful for others also if you can post your story. Thank you.
First of all tell people who say things like "just quit" to go to Hel*. They have no idea what they're talking about.
Now, step one. Write down the times that are hardest for you. Like after eating. With morning coffee. In the car.
Step two. Plan what you will do at these times instead of smoke. Hard candy, pencil and paper. Whatever works for you. It doesn't really matter what it is as long as it's the same thing every time. Replace a habit with a habit.
Step three. Write down all the reasons you want to quit and tape it to the mirror you look into in the mornings. Read it every morning.
Step three. Get help. The patch. the gum. what ever.
Step four. As new things come up that make you want a smoke, write them down and make a plan. As new benefits come to light, write them down too.
Good luck. I know how hard it is.
Just KEEP TRYING. If you smoke one, quite again.
am on day one with out a smoke an already its very hard i was wondering if there is a phone number to help you an guide you
ask your doctor there are lots of things they can give you to help, I smoked for many many years and my doctor gave me a pill called Zyban,it worked real well, I have not had a cigarette for 8 1/2 years now.
