I've been smoking on and off since i was 17, i'm 24 now. And although i don't buy them and don't smoke during most of the week, I smoke like a chimney anytime i step foot in a bar. GEt a drink in me and I can't control myself. I want to quit for good, even while drinking, has anyone done this successfully, and how did you do it?
The ol' goin to the bar trick, eh!?. I quit, cold turkey to be honest with ya. I quit twice, the first time was for 9 years, then I had a tragic event happen in my life, I lost my 12 year old son, so I thought well, you can drink your sorrows away, get high on cannibis, start takin drugs, or yea, hey; since i quit once, i can have a cigarette, and lay em down whenever i want to, no problem. 9 years later, I laid em' down. Done, finished, no urge, in fact i can't stand em'. Nothin' worse than a reformed smoker, we can be pretty critical at times among smokers. still to this day, man oh man, a cup of java in the early morning, and fire one up. ah, the pleasures you get out of that lil cancerous, dangerous, foul smelling, unhealthy plus expensive habit. Let's look at the advantages of smoking versus the disadvantages of not smoking. First, its fairly expensive habit, therefore our disposable income goes to marlboro instead of our family vacation. Second, the smell of them sticks are so pleasant, why not repeal the anti-smoking laws and lets ruin someones meal at the local cafe. Then, the great health we keep from smoking, not everyone who doesn't smoke cough a part of their lung out. And then it's the furniture company fault that they don't make a sofa cushion hot ash retardant. Oh, and how about that high blood pressure, there's no calories in a cigatrette, so heck, my heart problems are gonna be minimal, people who eat high fat foods are the ones, and then theres the romance part, yea, especially in the bar, you got em', smoke em'. real attractive having a cigarette dangling from your lips. But quitting is a mind set, until YOU are ready to quit, you wont quit. Bar or no bar. The health aspect alone should keep you from smoking, you know the dangers. try staying away from bars until you quit, I mean not half baked quit, real, real, honest, cross my heart quit. After you get the dependency factor gone, then the habit goes away, slowly, and then the very smell will make ya wanna slap someone. It's your call, now go out and quit, cut your alcohol use, you'll win the challenge. If nothing else, do it for your kids, yourself, your future. Good Luck, it's the hardest thing you'll ever do, but the rewards outweigh the bad.
These clips are from the BBC: Horizon documentary series entitled quot;We Love Cigarettesquot;. The advice Allen Carr gives is pretty damn good ...
My New Years resolution is to quit for good. I gained twenty pounds during my last two failed attempts, what method worked for you?
I quit 6 weeks ago yesterday, I just stayed away from smoke, and felt the health benefits as the days went by, and seriously - you start feeling better after just one day.
Try it, and keep on going. You don't need patches and gum - that's all crap, you could end up addicted to that stuff too.
Just quit and forget about them! It's not like you cant survive without them is it?
I did read the book by Alan Carr - The easy way to stop smoking, that helped. Good luck and break the dirty habbit!
Gain weight...not so good for me.
I gained 18 pounds. I'm NOT happy with myself.
I met with the nutritionist yesterday. I have a new diet/exercise plan. Being a type 1, I've never had to worry about my weight before. Now I do and while I'm happy I quit smoking, I'm really upset with the weight gain.
With my new plan (started yesterday), I have a 1200 calorie, 140 gram/carb diet. Walking and swimming are exercise. I'm realistic...I can lose 1-2 pounds a week and I will reach my weight goal in about 10-12 weeks. A weight of 132 and a BMI of 19-20 is where I need to be.
My last a1c was 8.8. That's an average of 200. I never had a problem with that before...weight gain sure can mess up your my numbers. The good news is that my last cholesterol was 164...down from 185 3 months ago (I just had the lab work done 3 days ago).
I want to feel and look attractive again. No, I'm not big by any means. I want to get back to where I was...without smoking.
EMT
My other goal is to have my hemo a1c down to 6.2 in 3 months, just in time for my next checkup.
I have realistic goals. I'm ready for this and I want to do this. It's just strange being where I need to lose weight...I've never had to worry about that before.
1200 calories per day is next to nothing.
See how you do but do not hesitate to add some more calories in fresh veggies or protein.
Good luck.
I've been smoking for over 10 years, and i've quit many times. I have gone as long as a year without a ciggarette in one of my attempts. The combination of stress, and being in the same vicinity (around others) who smoke, is what has made me in the past take back up the filthy habit.
Any suggestions for permanently quitting?
If you quit for a whole year you know how to do that part. Not starting again seems to be your problem. Decide to quit next Monday (or whatever day you decide) In the lead up - tell yourself 3 days until I am a non-smoker, 2 days until I am a non-smoker etc and when you wake up on the morning remind yourself straight away. I used patches for a few days but found them irritating. (Just another way of making money out of smokers!) Clean your teeth quite often, but also make a jug of iced. When you feel the need for a cigarette slowly drink a glass of iced tea. The caffeine in it will take the edge of the thought of smoking. (No milk in the tea of course.) After a few days you will find you don't even think of your iced tea so often. Keep telling yourself you are a non-smoker. When you feel stress drink iced tea. If you don't drink tea you have to have coke I suppose, but that is not very good for you, although it will give your caffeine hit! Never forget you are a non-smoker - especially when you are out and about with smokers.
I.ve tried pills, patches, gums and natural supplements and they all don't work any suggestions on how to quit smoking for good?
