I am not a smoker, but often come across people who are very "protective" of their choice to smoke. Why do people start smoking in the first place, then after a time, why do they want to quit?
When they are young they think it makes them look "cool" and mature ( they do not realize it makes them look stupid). Once they try it, they are hooked and it is extremely difficult to stop. Cigarettes have addictive chemicals added to them to get people addicted - it sells more cigarettes. Not only are cigarettes a death sentence and makes people smell disgustingly bad, have you noticed that most people driving broken down trashed cars are smokers? If they took the $300 or more a month they pay for cigarettes and spent it on a car payment instead of cigarettes, they could drive something far more dependable. And the reason smokers are so denfensive about quitting - they do not want to admit that tiny little thing has them completely under its control and they are too weak to overcome it.
These clips are from the BBC: Horizon documentary series entitled quot;We Love Cigarettesquot;. The advice Allen Carr gives is pretty damn good ...
I don't want to quit. I enjoy smoking. How do I make myself WANT to quit?
Don't try to quit smoking unless you really want to quit. And, even if you want to quit, it may take several times to get it right (it usually does).
But, very important, recognize that you don't enjoy smoking. You may think you do. But what is really happening is that you are enjoying having your addiction satisfied - that is, the elimination of the withdrawal symptoms that quickly develop between smokes.
You need to realize how addicted you are, and recognize that any sense of enjoyment comes from meeting your addiction.
You may not reach this stage of understanding.
But until you do, you will always fool yourself into thinking that you "enjoy" smoking.
Good luck.

Millions of people are hopelessly addicted and want to quit but can't. The addiction is so bad that even all their friends dying from lung cancer doesn't stop them. Many people near death still have to light up to the very end.
I smoke about 2 packs a day. If there was a rehab center for stopping smoking, I would definitely check in. What are your thoughts on this?
sure it would be one hell of a way for them to give back to those that they have "addicted" and it should be free and on their dime, but that would cut into their profits too much so never gonna happen
I want to quit smoking to save money and for the sake of my health but every time I give up i get paranoid and angry at the slightest thing! I think half of it is all in my head, I convince myself that life is not worth living without smoking.
Any ideas, tips or suggestions?
Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves.
Congratulate yourself on having the desire to stop - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It's just so easy to start thinking that just one won't hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don't have just one. Beware - alcohol will weaken your resolve.
Here's a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It's not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something', which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.
After we have stopped for a while we will begin to feel that just one wont to any harm.
All that leads to is a desire for just another one. We must guard very strongly against the desire to have just one.
I've been doing well, but suddenly I want one so bad. It's like I feel I need the reward I used to feel from smoking. This is the strongest urge I've had since I quit. I seem to be becoming fixated on it. I've also been eating alot, but exercising it off so my weight has been fairly stable at least. Any advice is appreciated.
You will find times when you hit this brick wall, find a way around it. Congrats on looking for another way to deal with it by asking your internet family. The urge will pass, try to do something to occupy your mind for a little while. Do a few minutes of exercise. Put a piece of candy in your mouth to draw the attention away from the craving. Figure out what works for you so you are prepared if it happens again. Goodluck and stay strong.

Have You Ever Quit Smoking And Not Started Up Again ...
I was sitting at a local restaurant, watching the children at the table next to me. My biological clock was ticking, and I was always interested in having a little boy. As I watched, the child tried to get up out of his seat, but his mother yelled at him to get back down. He began to ask when they could leave. She answered, “Let mommy finish her cigarette, please.” He sat there and watched her as she pulled one out of her pack. “Are you going to light your cigarette now, mommy?” he asked. She lit it up. I shook my head, and vowed to never smoke around my child. I figured that – not only was it not healthy for both myself and the child, but a child should not know the ‘how’s” to lighting and smoking a cigarette – especially at the age of about four, as this child looked. That was when I decided that my quitting time would be before I had a child. Granted, that was (hopefully) several years away (which I was right about!), and I still had time to party and be what I considered – irresponsible – with my body. Once a child came onto the scene, responsibility would set in, and I would have to give up my party life. I was not too worried about it, and figured that, once I got to that point, I would have been darned close to giving up cigarettes as well. Since my husband did not smoke, and neither did his friends; I used to have to go sit at the bar and smoke by myself. It was not something that I found difficult. It actually was one of those good way-to-get-out-of-boring-conve… methods. I would just stand up and say, “Excuse me, I’m gonna go have a smoke.” Most people would decline to come with me, so I was left alone for a short while. There are several ways to resolve to quit, and the first is by making a list of why you want to. An example of such reasons might be the benefits to your health, the extra money you would have once you stopped buying cigarettes (a pack-a-day smoker can save almost $2000 a year by giving up smoking!), or even the added benefit of raising your children in a smoke-free environment. Also, many people try to choose a day when they will quit completely. That person may begin by cutting down on smoking a couple of weeks before this or her actual Quit Day. That person may choose a day that bears a big significance for them in other ways – perhaps a birthday coincides, so they may say that they “quit smoking for his or her 35th birthday”. Alternatively, one may want to pick a day in a month that you have no reason to party! Therefore, once your Quit Day comes around again, you can celebrate to your newfound health and wealth! More than a quarter of cancer survivors who still smoke have not been advised to quit smoking by their health care providers in the last year, according to a study published by researchers at Fox Chase Cancer Center in the current issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine. The findings suggest that health care providers - from doctors to dentists to […] ASH praised politicians for voting in favour of ending the display of tobacco and banning the sale of tobacco from vending machines, legislation that will put tobacco out of sight and out of reach. Chief Executive of ASH Deborah Arnott said: "This is the most significant step forward in public health since smokefree legislation. […]
