My friend, a 14 year old male, smokes cigarettes about 6 times a day. he's tried gum and sunflower seeds, but he really wants to quit cold turkey. any ideas?
Here is what I would recommend:
1) Use the patch and start on step 3. I used to smoke and when I did this, I started on step 2 because I was around 1-2 packs a day and couldn't afford the patch long enough to do all 3 steps. I never felt a craving of nicotine on step 2 though
2) Have a pack of gum on hand at all times for when the oral fixation occurs
3) Do not drink alcohol for 2-3 months at least as these are the times it is most difficult for a newly non-smoker to not have one
4) kindly ask your friends who are smokers to not smoke when your friend is around. If they are true friends, they will happily take to this request.
5) Get some exercise because quitting smoking tends to add 15-20 pounds on.
* get past the 1st week and it gets easier from there.

My smoking is pretty bad. I started in 2004 @ age 19 as a social smoker, now I'm hitting 2 packs a day.
When I quit I want to go to sleep for 8-9 hours so that my body will have a head start on getting it out of my system. BUT, I dread how my body will react. Any idea of what it'll be like?
It'll be hard as shit. Good luck, don't be discouraged. It's unpleasant, but possible. You'll feel free afterwards.

How long did you smoke?
When did you quit?
What helped you to not smoke again?
I smoked from 1982 to 2006. I quit several times, the best being 8 months, before relapsing. So, this time, it is for real. I quit Aug 15/06 and am still going strong.
The best thing I have now, to make sure I don't smoke again is the knowledge that it really is TRUE that I am one smoke away from being a smoker.
Just like being an alcoholic. I can't smoke just one. So, I KNOW, that if I just have a puff, I'm just around the corner from full blown smoking yet again. So, if I take the puff, I know what I'm saying is that I don't want to stay quit.
Simple.
I just can't have a drag, puff, or a butt.
Good luck. Keep trying until you get it done.

I get so frustrated everytime I try to quit. Please give me some ideas to help me quit.
Well, there are alternatives to stopping cold turkey. You could cut your cigarettes in half and just smoke a few puffs of each one and gradually cut down. You could try the nicotine products. you could get the chantix prescription and use that.
I can't afford any prescription drugs, or let alone smoking anymore. Is there any herbs or natural things to help? And will this eventually pass on it's own?
Thanks
Quitting smoking is very challening. You could try a L-tyrosine supplement which helped me tremendously! smoking depletes dopamine as well as norepinephrine overtime and L-tyrosine is the building block for these neurotransmitters. It has helped me and my 2 brothers quit for good! It is also fairly cheap maybe 10 bucks a bottle....well here in canada anyways. It's good that u want to quit thats a smart move and u will benefit in your health

Panic Survivor - quit smoking ....
My husband and I both decided to quit smoking. Well, I wanted to quit just didn't think it was time yet but being that he was ready, I thought I would quit as well so that way , he wouldn't be around cigarettes and also, I just think it would be better for both of us to quit together.
Today is Day 3 and we are doing this cold turkey. YES, it is rough. We have both been moody and more irritable. My anxiety has been decent, I can't complain. I thought it would be through the roof when I quit but it's actually not too bad. I've heard that the nicotine in cigarettes contributes to anxiety b/c it's a stimulant. So, I'm hoping that this will help w/ quitting. Only time will tell.
