What do you believe is the most successful or best smoking cessation (quitting smoking) program?
Cut packet

As a smoker of many years and a explorer of the available cessation "programs" I offer my personal BIASED opinion. I have "explored" (because I am still smoking) many "programs" from hypnosis, cold turkey, patches, gum the list goes on....I have come to my own personal conclusion that none of them work UNLESS "you" are ready and WANT to quit. If you are ready and WANT to free yourself from this "habit/addiction" it is MY experience that the most helpful program for me was "the pill" I recommend you research "chantix" it actually blocks the receptors in the brain from the nicotine "reward" I used it, it worked, I went from a four pack a day habit to ZERO cigarettes in less than two weeks with no adverse side effects, and the ONLY reason I resumed my "habit" was my conclusion that I really did not WANT to eliminate smoking from my routine/life. In closing, I hope I am getting my point across, as long as you are convicted in your desire to eliminate smoking from your life, it can be done. As for my "program" that was successful, Chantix did what it claimed to do. I on the other hand found the psychological connection with smoking to be stronger than my physical addiction. I hope you have the psychological DESIRE to eliminate nicotine, and find a "program" that works for you.

If smoking cessation (patch, gum, etc.) were cheaper, would more people quit?

I quit smoking 5 years ago (cold turkey) and I know it's hard for many people to kick the habit. But the smoking cessation products are very expensive. Many people, especially those who are on a fixed income I'm sure can't afford these things, or the cost is a serious deterrent to quitting.

My question is: if they were cheaper, do you think more people would quit? Do you think the government or other agencies (nonprofit groups, retailers, etc.) should step in and perhaps offer rebates or other incentives so people have more incentive and help quitting?

I think if the government cares about the health of its people and the environment they should offer assistance to people to help them to quit, after all there is help out there to get people off drugs, and cigarettes are more addictive than cocaine or heroin.

If you have any thoughts or insights about this topic, feel free to answer. Thanks, everyone!

Everyone, I urge you to contact your state representatives, if Iowa, Maryland and New York have these programs, we may be able to get them elsewhere. Thanks!

Actually though the smoking cessation products are mostly cheaper than the cigarettes. My opinion is that cold turkey is the only way to go. I have 4 friends that failed with Chantix which is supposed to be the best thing going now.The government doesn't really want people to quit because then they lose all of that revenue.

Smoking cessation. Who has quit? How did you do it?

Vinter: I can sympathize. I quit once for seventeen days on the gum.
Cliffie: Unfortunate for you, hilarious for me.

first, made the decision in my head and my heart.
then replaced coffee (my constant companion to a smoke) with drinks I hated, like water, grapefruit juice etc. the stuff that left a terrible taste in my mouth. then i quit eating snacks at night - quit the chocolate, chips, etc. then, i picked a day and time for my last smoke. I forced myself NOT to watch the clock to see how long it's been since my last smoke as a 'pat on the back' because I knew that would only keep the idea of smoking alive and well in my consciousness. Lastly, I made the decision that being around others who smoked was NOT going to affect me.

I had my first smoke when 9 and started buying my own at 12 and at my peak, would be into my fifth pack for the day. I never left home without at least four packs in my purse - heaven forbid I get caught somewhere without a smoke...

It was the first and only time I even thought about quitting and that was in 1998.

How hard is it to quit smoking?

I'm planning on quitting starting Aug 21st. My reason is so i can live longer for my child, plus he has asthma and i don' t want the cigarette smoke in my clothes anymore when he breathes it in. Another reason is gas prices are so high now and between gas prices and buying cigarettes i spend at least $80-$100 a month. This will be my first time ever doing this, i don't even know how to quit or avoid the cravings. I really can't afford the smoking cessation classes (don't know if i spelled the word right lol) i just want to do it on my own. I already know that the nicotine gum won't work because i already chew gum when i'm smoking a cigarette. Need advice please and thank you to all!
I have people that will support me, like my boyfriend (he wants me to quit also), co-workers, my mom said she'll support me but she smokes too and i live with her, i know other family members will be willing to help me.

To start quitting is a pretty good idea. You'll find usefull info there.

Good luck !

  • Phone Counseling Can Help Teens With Smoking Cessation, Quit ...

Phone counseling that is centered on motivational interviewing and personalized behavioral skills has been found to help teens with smoking cessation, according to a pair of studies published online October 12 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The two studies that were published in the Oct. 12 online issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, suggested that smoking cessation programs that involve phone counseling can make it easier for teens to give up the habit early.

Lead researcher Arthur V. Peterson, PhD and colleagues at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle constructed this program to determine the effectiveness of telephone counseling.
