aids free quit smoking

All I seem to hear about is why people should pack up smoking. Well if that is the case, why do the Government not make all Quit Smoking Aids FREE from Pharmacies. Junkies can get Needles Free, Why Not Patches/Gum for Smokers.

I was a smoker, started when I was 11- and married at 16, the moment the DR said I was preggers, as I walked out of the DR office, I dump my cigaretts in the garbage can!
stay quit foir nine months.... all on my own, it is a mind thing, anything you set your mind to do, you can do it.
I will admit though some things are more difficult for some others, like I cant seem to loose weight for the life of me! but I drop them smokes like a hot potato!
I want to add, I would goi back to smoking each time I had my baby- (had 3 of them) and when my baby daughter was 2- she picked up a pencil and was pretending to smoke- I said right then NO MORE.
That has been almost 17 years ago.
and I have not had a single smoke.

Congrats!!! Wanting to quit is great . I quit a year ago. Anyway at the community hospital here they have a preventative care dept where they offer help with these things. Perhaps they have a department like that at your local hospital. Also some drug manufacturers will offer some help for various drug needs.
For some patches you should contact nicoderm company to see if they can help at all.
Maybe the cancer society can help too. It never hurts to check these places out.

Accelerate the Quiting Process

I quit cold-turkey and am not using any aids, patches, etc. So far, so good, but I wonder statistically what the odds are of being successful. Or, am I in fact asking this dumb question as a means of justifying a failure...
I had smoked for about 15 years. 1 pack a day, and my wife is a non-smoker so there is no other tobacco around the house.

Your odds of staying a nonsmoker are very small. Quitting smoking is very, very tough.

With that said....stick with it. I quit cold turkey in August 2006 after being a 2 pack a day smoker.

Here are some of the things that I did...

1) When the urge to smoke comes (and it will), find something active to do...take a walk, clean the house, even engage someone in a conversation.

2) Find something to do with your mouth...I ate sunflower seeds. Some people suck on lollipops or put toothpicks in their mouths.

3) Don't worry about putting on a few pounds. Don't use the excuse of gaining weight to go back to smoking. You will probably put on a few pound (I did), but you will be able to take them off (I did).

I believe the ministry offers fre needle exchange and methadone treatment for addicts .Is this same sort of support offered to smokers who wish to quit? For the record, I don't smoke, I'm jusrt curious.Thanks to all who reply.

EDIT to Idesiremoonlight, what you say about helping the smoker to stop smoking would be very helpful.The ministry has programs to assist drug addicts ( needle exchange.....not quitting, just providing clean needles...why not the same standard as smokers...stop the addiction not enable it.I am really thinking the government can't afford to lose the tax revenue from cigerette sales and any health concens involving the smoker is secondary at best.

Well if a person is admitted, the physician may order the nicoderm patches. This cost is covered. while they are in hospital at least. It is a start so to speak. As for what the government will provide upon discharge i don't know.
However it would be more pro-active on the part of the government if they had some service such as this. This could also be a platform perhaps to use in the next election period. If they want to ban smoking in all locations etc, then they should provide the support to help the smoker fascillitate this process.

I'm using the Nicorette inhaler to quit smoking. I've been smoking for 17 years and today was my first day of quitting and I did really good.
My question is what kind of changes can I expect in my body and when, even though I am still taking in a small amount of nicotine? If anyone knows, that would be great.

Expect to notice a little change in your breathing. I've been smoke free for 9 days now (woo!), and when I get up early in the morning I feel like I have a huge open space in my chest where my lungs are. lol.
The nicotine from the inhaler will give you the jitters, and you might get an "ash-tray" like taste occasionally.

Keep up the good work. Try not to faulter!
This is my only successful try after six times, and I hope it sticks.
Glad you could go with Nicorette, I had to go on Chantix and it has some strange side effects.
