I have surgery coming up soon and they told me that I have to stop smoking and they are going to give me a nicotine test before surgery. I know its important to quit now but I'm finding it very very hard to quit. does any one know how many days it takes to pass a nicotine test?

The common answer to this question used for smokers who are trying to quit is about 72 hours, or about three days.

However, your doctor may have a more sensitive test, which may be able to check deeper tissues or something of the sort.

can a person use someone else's urine for a nicotine test?

I am having gastric bypass surgery 9/11 but have a nicotine test coming up 8/29 and I have started smoking again and I have a friend that is willing to let me use her urine. Do you think it will be possible to do?
thank-you for answering my question. I am a 54-year old woman that has battled weight for 33 years. The only reason I started smoking again was I recently lost my Mom to pancreatic cancer after a year long battle. I had quit for 8 months and after I buried her I started again. Yes I can follow the guidelines for the surgery . I have been through all of the testing and nutritional classes and am ready to proceed except for the nicotine problem. I had been scheduled late last year and when Mom got her death sentence I was afraid to go ahead not knowing when I would be needed to help with her last days. I may sound weak but just so everyone knows I'm not. Thank-you once again

All you would be accomplishing by the deception is creating a more dangerous situation for yourself by lying about your nicotine consumption. Gastric Bypass Surgery is a very serious procedure and I'm sure it has already been explained to you that there is a potential fatality rate that is a reality and not a fantasy. The precautionary measures taken by the surgeons is crucial not only for the success of the operation but also for your own health and recovery from the trauma of the procedure. Media and other reports of this procedure have given it the image of being a simple everyday not to worry go for it operation but the reality is that there are and have been complications resulting in severe to fatal outcomes. Get real and stop playing games. We're talking about your Life here!!!

Why do I see people on here saying they have to take a nicotine test to get a job?
AGILENT 6890N, AGILENT 5975B INERT MSD, AGILENT 7683B, AGILENT NCD Dual Plasma

Do they really test for nicotine for some jobs? That seems unfair and discriminatory. What is it about a smoker that makes them undesirable as a prospective employee? I'm assuming this is in America as I doubt you could get away with doing this in Australia.

There is a company around here that at one time tested for nicotine. Tobacco users were not accepted in the company. I don't know if they still do it though. I knew several people who were fired when the company started their new policy.

The reasons why they didn't want tobacco users in the company was due to health insurance premiums and general health issues. Another issue is that non-smokers will work for 4 or 5 hours without a break but smokers generally don't like to go that long between cigarette breaks.

One of the problems with this is second hand smoke. If someone lives with a heavy smoker (or more than one) they may test positive.

Most of the companies that I've seen who want to eliminate smoking go a simpler route. They do not allow smoking on their property (even if you are in your car with the windows rolled up) and they don't allow you to leave their property until your entire shift is over (8 to 12 hours depending on the job). Essentially, this creates a constant withdrawal for the smokers. They either get caught sneaking and fired or they quit either smoking or the job.

Another tactic is to raise the health insurance premiums so high that the employee will find work somewhere else.
