My lab puppy ate part of a nicotine lozenge...is this going to harm him?
What's in the bag?

He is about 22 lbs. and he actually only ate about half of one lozenge...

You do need to call your vet. These can be very toxic. I don't know what the absorption rate/ weight toxicity is though.

Why can't you drink anything 15 minutes before taking a Nicotine lozenge?

Anyone know why?

I always thought that afterwards, it would wash the excess nicotene in your mouth down to your stomach making it easier for you to get too much nic too fast plus it would potentially make you throw up if you weren't used to the nicotene. Like the caffine shakes or something. I drank while using it and it didn't hurt me.

Is a nicotine lozenge just as effective in my anus?

nicotine is very quickly absorbed by mucous membranes, be they in your mouth, nose or rectum. If the lozenge was inserted into your anus it would be absorbed quickly, unless of course, if the act of putting it there made you have a BM.
I can not see what harm would come from taking your medicine that way, as lots of meds are administered that way when for some reason the person needing them can't safely swallow.

Does breaking a nicotine lozenge in half release more nicotine more quickly?

Breaking the lozenge in half will increase the surface area of the pill exposed to your mouth, so more of it will dissolve and release. Therefore it will be released slightly faster. But continue reading...

Now here's the important part. The lozenge is designed to be absorbed through your mouth, not your stomach like many tablets/capsules etc. So you don't want to chew the tablet. You can only absorb so much through your mouth cavity at a time, so you should not chew or break the tablet in. Although it would be released faster, it may not be absorbed faster.

Remember don't swallow the "juice" produced by the lozenge, because the stomach acid/enzymes will destroy the effects of the nicotine. Take the medication as described allowing the lozenge to slowly dissolve (20-30 min). This will enable your mouth lining to absorb the nicotine.

Drug companies spend a lot of money to test there medications. Take it as directed

So although more nicotine would be released faster, it won't necessarily be absorbed faster and you are increasing the chance of the lozenge "juice" entering your stomach, which could actually decrease the amount of nicotine you get.

The best nicotine lozenge?

Is there any difference between different brands of nicotine lozenge?

My mother-in-law had success with nicabate gum.

She found thais useful as she was able to slowly switch to lower strength gum and eventually switched to ordinary gum.

This worked two ways in that she was slowly weened off the nicotine (highly adictive) as well as being able to switch one oral fixation for another, less confronting, more socially acceptable one.
