and if so, how?
A friend of mine has ADD and ADHD, he also smokes and is an insomniac. He is 17 years old if age helps in any way. He's currently trying to cut down on smoking and will soon stop all together.
Speed helps people with ADD or ADHD, and nicotine acts the same way. They smoke to self-medicate. They say it helps them concentrate and feel more "normal". So don't nag him to quit.
The main side effect of nicotine on the body is the cutting off of oxygen to several areas of the body, particularly the muscles. Get rid of ...
I mean just nicotine and just the digestive system. not smoking, not tar.
It tends to excite the digestive system. It increases peristalsis.
I'm not sure if it has any other effects.
I'm not about to start using them but am wondering how harmful (long term) and addictive using the patches would be compared to smoking the cigarettes? Is it just the act of ingesting the nicotine through the lungs that is harmful?
I have heard that nicotine is actually a poison?
Just for the record:
I am not wanting to start wearing/using them. This is solely being asked from a curiousity point of view.
Nicotine is the addictive substance in cigarettes. However, in the main it isn't the nicotine in cigarettes that causes the damage but other substances (tar is one). So, wearing the patches would probably get you addicted but not damage your health (much).
Highly concentrated nicotine is a poison - it's used as an insecticide in some places. It's not in this concentrated form in cigarettes and what little negative effect the nicotine has is insignificant in comparison with tar & carbon monoxide.
EDIT:
If a non-smoker went straight to wearing a high strength patch it would be very uncomfortable & could be dangerous. But this is exactly the same as a non-smoker suddenly smoking 20 cigarettes per day. You'd feel uncomfortably overdosed on it before it became dangerous and you'd want to get away from it. You'd probably rip the patch off. If the non-smoker who was wearing the patch was unconscious or asleep then it could be dangerous.
A non-smoker could, theoretically work up to a full strength patch by starting with the lowest strength patch. (For most brands there are 3 strengths, often 7mg, 14mg & 21mg nicotine content.)
Smoking delays the healing process. It effects the oxygen flow to your body parts, through constricting the blood vessels. I know, that's what my doc told me.. He is right.
it is my science project and if u r going to ask a question about my questiondont even try!
To be sure you don't kill the daphnia, first I would suggest finding the LC50 (Lethal Concentration for 50% of the population) for daphnia. Try looking on www.toxnet.gov or google "MSDS Nicotine" and look under the effects in the effects on animals section. As a bonus, you might even find an OEC50 (Observed Effect Concentration for 50% of the population) for accelerated heart rate for your species.
Second, create a gradient of concentrations and test each one on a different population each time. That way you don't have carry-over effects. So, overall, it's not that I can tell you how much to put in (although you may find that answer in the MSDS) but rather trial-and-error. If you are just trying to replicate results of a previously published experiment, then repeat the procedure exactly and verify or disprove their findings.
Once you have your data you can create a neat graph with Concentration on the x-axis and effected population percent on the y-axis. The above procedure is fairly well accepted in the toxicology community. Best of luck; sounds like fun!

Curcumin blocks nicotine effect on head and neck cancer, Herbal ...
Patients with head and neck cancer who continue to smoke could benefit from curcumin, the ingredient found in the spice turmeric. For the study, scientists pre-treated cancer cells in vitro with curcumin, and then exposed the cells to nicotine, finding that the curry powder spice blocked the cancer activating properties of the cells.
The findings were presented at the 2009 American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF) Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO in San Diego. Curcumin has recently been studied for multiple its health benefits. Research shows that curcumin in turmeric has powerful disease fighting properties.
Curcumin from turmeric was studied on neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) growths. Nicotine replacement therapy is often used by patients, who develop head and neck cancer, and many unfortunately continue to smoke. Curcumin could offer a safe solution to prevent head and neck cancer recurrence.
