Nicotine is a short-acting drug that is eliminated from the body relatively quickly (i.e., within a day or so). However, the effects of acute nicotine withdrawal can be felt for as much as two weeks or more. In addition, the byproducts of nicotine can be detected in the blood for up to a month after you stop smoking. This is only of concern if you are in a situation where someone else might want to test you for the presence of nicotine or nicotine byproducts in your system.

Most people can quit "cold turkey" without any ill effects other than feeling irritable, restless, and craving cigarettes. However, if you have any medical condition for which you are (or should be) receiving treatment, it's a good idea to check with your doctor first. He or she can also support your efforts to quit and discuss nicotine replacement options if you choose to slowly wean yourself off nicotine.

For those unfamiliar, an e-cigarette is a vaporizer. Uses the same stuff found in fog machines, mixed with nicotine and flavoring, to simulate smoking.

You can get the mixture from several sources, many of which have "no nicotine" options.

However, since this is a fairly new invention, it isn't highly regulated. Supposedly the FDA found traces of nicotine in mixtures that were labeled as no-nicotine.

If I buy a nicotine urine test at the pharmacy, will it be able to detect nicotine in the mixtures I buy? Or will I have to use them and then pee on the test?

Silly question, but I'm no chemist.

They actually make nicotine urine tests now? I worked as a Lab Tech for 10 years, and never once did we get a request to test for that.

Well, I've had an eye problem and something is growing on the top of my eye. But the Doctor might have a blood test, and I know you can detect nicotine in the blood. And she might tell my Dad about it. If I got caught being a smoker my Dad wouldn't think twice about beating me.

Please don't tell me to quit smoking or talk to my Dad about it. Just give me an answer.

When doctors run blood tests they test specifically what they're looking for. I can't think of any eye conditions that would require a doctor to know your blood nicotine level, so they will not be testing for it.

Also, they cannot run tests without your consent. They would have to ask if it's ok to test for nicotine. Also, due to doctor-patient privilege, they are not allowed to discuss their findings with your father without your consent.

Not that I'm aware of and they don't test for nicotine on drug tests.
