how do they test you for syphilis?? does it hurt??

also how do i get tested for STD'S is it done along with the pap smear?

Some health care providers can diagnose syphilis by examining material from a chancre (infectious sore) using a special microscope called a dark-field microscope. If syphilis bacteria are present in the sore, they will show up when observed through the microscope.

A blood test is another way to determine whether someone has syphilis. Shortly after infection occurs, the body produces syphilis antibodies that can be detected by an accurate, safe, and inexpensive blood test. A low level of antibodies will likely stay in the blood for months or years even after the disease has been successfully treated. Because untreated syphilis in a pregnant woman can infect and possibly kill her developing baby, every pregnant woman should have a blood test for syphilis.

It shouldn't hurt at all. :-)

I have read somewhere that testing for syphilis is sometimes not accurate. My concern is can I feel confident I do not have it with a blood test? Also I want to only be tested for syphilis, clymadia and gonerhea. Can I just get tested for those and nothing else if I ask? Also none of these involve doing a swab test for a guy in the penis does it? Thanks

Syphylis is tested for in a blood tes. It is not something to be ignored since that id what killed Al Capone. It can get into your brain and cause death. Gonherra and clymadia both require a swab inside the penis. It only hurts for a second. But if you are worried that you have these iseases why are you not worried about HIV. It is still growing in numbers in heterosexual people because they do not practice safe sex. You never know who you have slept with. Also with the medications these days most TDs are easily treated but whoever you have had contact with also needs treatment. nd with the new medications for HIV it is not a death sentance anymore. Diagnosis is by serologic tests and adjunctive tests selected based on the disease stage. Penicillin is the drug of choice.
Venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL) test
A negative test is normal and means that no antibodies to syphilis have been detected. The screening test is most likely be positive in secondary and latent syphilis. During primary and tertiary syphilis this test may be falsely negative.
Rapid plasma reagin (RPR)- False-negatives may occur in persons with early- and late-stage syphilis. More testing may be needed before ruling out syphilis.
Fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) test- A positive FTA-ABS usually indicates infection with syphilis. This test result will remain positive for life even if syphilis has been adequately treated. Therefore, it cannot be used to monitor the treatment of syphilis.

A friend of mine told me that her syphilis test came back inconclusive the first time. She re-tested and it came back inconclusive again. What does that mean?

It could be a false positive or it could mean the virus has not had enough time to incubate and show a strong positive as yet. She should go back in about 6-8 weeks and be tested again.
