If I have had a hepatitis vaccination, should a hepatitis test on a blood test turn out positive?
San Francisco Hep B Free

Just for the sake of it, since the doctor had to take blood from me anyhow, I asked him to do me an AIDS test, which also includes hepatitis tests - I had had a hepatitis vaccination a year ago, and I'm not sure if it's the same type that came on positive, but is that the case, that if you've been vaccinated, the tests turn out positive?

The vaccine was for Hep B? I don't think there is a vaccine for Hep C and Hep A is pretty common and tends not to be very serious.
So when they test you for Hep B, there is a test for antibodies and a test for the virus. If you had the vaccine, you should test positive for Hep B, this means that your immune system has responded to the vaccine as was expected.
In your case, you should be concerned if the test for Hep B surface antigen was positive, this means you have the virus.
You should also be concerned if you test positive for antibodies to Hep C, since this would not be due to the vaccine.

Will drinking alcohol the night before a hepatitis test affect the results?
San Francisco Hep B Free

I'm just curious...I know that drinking is bad if you HAVE hepatitis...but could it make the test results messed-up to drink beforehand? I'm assuming you either have it or you don't, and drinking before will not affect the results....

No, drinking won't effect the test. The test is done by using something that looks for the antibodies your immune system makes when you have Hep. The only way you can have these antibodies is if you were exposed to Hep.

Drinking may cause elevated liver enzymes, but it definitly won't cause a hep. test to be positive.

Good luck :)

Medical test for Dubai residence visa - is Hepatitis B vaccination for every one?

I am planning to bring my wife and kid to dubai. Recently I read that Hepatitis B test is made compulsary and Hepatitis B vaccination is made compulsary for everyone. Will my kid also will undergo the medical tests and Hepatitis B vaccination? Kid's age is 1yr 11 month. pls advice.

"According to the decision taken by the Minister of Health Humaid Al Quttami, the rules are being implemented on a trial basis for three months, and may be subject to change in the coming months."

A group of professionals who are especially under the scanner include food handlers, nannies, housemaids, educators/teachers, and people who work in restaurants and heath fields due to the sensitivity of their profession.

This "law/rule" is so new and still on trial, that no details are provided. Right now housewifes who apply for a residence visa also do NOT have to undergo the TB x-ray. Therefore I assume that the requirements regarding Hepatitis vaccinations will be for the mentioned professions only.

Does anyone know where to purchase the HIV and Hepatitis C ORASURE test kits?

I was wondering if anyone might know where regular consumers (me) can purchase the ORASURE HIV/Hepatitis instant test kits? I know they were recently FDA approved, but I can't find anything on the internet as to where they can be purchased by the general population, if at all. Thanks to everyone in advance!

They are not available to the general population. You need to be a medical provider, or as many community based organizations, associated with a medical provider to purchase the kits. To get tested you can find a clinic or a community based organization that will do free testing.

  • Former drug addict urges more to take hepatitis test (From Stroud ...

A FORMER drug addict from Stroud is encouraging more people to get tested for hepatitis C.

Nigel Calvert was 19-years-old when he contracted the virus through intravenous drug use in 2002.

He has lived drug-free since 2004 and now works as an NHS drug and alcohol advocacy worker.

Nigel’s plea is part of the Department of Health’s Get Tested Get Treated campaign for hepatitis C, which launches across the UK this week.

Experts estimate that only half of the 200,000 people in the UK infected with the virus have actually been diagnosed, as it can often lie undetected and symptomless for 20 years or more.

Currently the most common cause of transmission is through the shared use of drug-taking equipment, although the Government is warning that you may also be at risk if you have had a blood transfusion before September 1991 or received blood products before 1986 in the UK.
