I know there is usually preemployment drug testing, but are pharmacy employees frequently drug tested?Im just curious about how often a pharmacist would have to pass a drug test throughout their career.

im a pharmacy tech and i only got drug tested once in the beginning. ive been there for a year now...but it just depends on what phamacy/company youre working for and their policy.

Does anyone know if as an employer could drug test an employee because they suspect the employee is using drugs? It's a construction company. They do drug testing before they get hired. But after that have not had any.

What is the company policy? Most union construction companies will test if there is suspicion. Most companies will have something in their written policy manuals still have something about random testing.

In a recent conversation with several people, not everyone could agree on some legality issues regarding employee drug testing such as how much time must be given in advance prior to testing? Some said a 24 hour notice must be given to the employee prior to testing and others said that employers are not required to give a prior notice at all.
I was one of the few who believed that a 24 hour notice was required but I won't stand behind that as I don't have any real knowledge of the laws and rights (for both employer and employee) regarding drug testing.
Can anyone tell me where I might be able to find some information on this subject or does anyone with knowledge of this matter have any information to share with me? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Drug testing and the method selected for notifying employees will be identified in your employee handbook.

However, an employer must be able to identify specific reasons to test an employee for illegal drug use and those reasons have to be codified in law, ie, public health or safety.

For example, an employer has a legitmate reason to test an airline pilot for drug use (illegal or otherwise) that may affect his/her job performance. Still, an employer has the obligation to notify an employee of an impending drug test--per established policy.

Random drug tests, for no stated public health and/or safety reasons are not legal.

I don't do drugs. Someone said this and I was wondering what you thought about it.

I don't think it does, so long as the employee understands - before being hired officially - that there will be drug testing. If the employee acknowledges that s/he understands that there will be drug testing and perhaps signs something that states this, then the employee has effectively given up his/her rights in that regard.

At least, I believe how these things work. ;o)
