Why do drug companies carry out testing for drugs on animals?

Drug companies investigate a thousand possible drugs for every one that actually gets to market. Once a drug is developed to a certain point, and it's ready for testing, it has to be tested on animals first, because the animal testing phase almost always shows some unexpected problems that may keep it from being tried on humans. Only then do they proceed to small human studies, and then larger human studies. It's a matter of protecting human life. Nobody in his right mind would test on humans something that hadn't first been tested on animals, just as nobody in his right mind would volunteer to be so tested.

I take a urine screen for work, and it asks for 5 types of drugs. 4 of these drugs stay in your system no more than a few days after consumption. the 5th, marijuana, stays for a month or more. I know we have a lot of meth and coke and pill heads in the work force, these are the real dangers. Seems to me like these companies are taking a shortcut to finding new ways to detect these dangerous drugs by hanging onto marijuana detection because it busts so many people. And businesses that require this test for employment seem to be getting a break from their insurance carriers for the same reason. Is it just me, or is this real?

This is "the man's" way of telling you that weed is bad, but it's perfectly acceptable to do meth and heroin.

and why is it mostly for low-skilled jobs? Are doctors required to do drug tests? Lawyers? Why is it important for a factory worker to be drug tested, but not a lawyer? What about cops?
Are they tested? I am not arguing for increased drug testing!
Why test ANYONE for drugs. Airline pilots, other jobs that require extreme alertness. Truck drivers I can understand.
But for many jobs, smoking a little marijuana should not be a deal breaker. Note that I do not use drugs of any kind and barely drink. But ... I am not opposed to drug use if done in moderation.

I want to set up a drug testing company. What are the legal requirements for a testing center that services the court system, high school athletic departments, and DOT licensing and job applicants?

there is a governing body most likely with your state and must have some education towards that dept I would think .

Every other drug is out of your system in days. It doesn't catch alcoholics so the whole drug testing industry is based on busting pot smokers who are not dangerous, show if anything an extra attention to detail and creativity attributes you would think a company would want. I agree heavy machinery, doctors, bus drivers should be tested but what if you are applying for a job in customer service, housekeeping or cook. Studies have proven that those work places that test are no safer statistically than those that don't so why do we continue this insanity.

If all they are doing is a urine analysis, then yes, you are correct. other tests such as blood and hair analysis can detect a plethora of other drugs, but most companies don't do that (too expensive). so, most of the time, these tests are just for show, and pretty pointless. though, i think part of the objective is to discourage drug use.
