Companies That Drug Test

I worked for a company that employed about 170 people. Technical laboratory personnel,
drivers and many others … but no drug testing why not?

Maybe they don't like the expense, where other companies figure the cost of the testing will pay for itself in the long run.

Every other drug is out of your system in days. It doesn't catch alcoholics so the whole drug testing industry is based on busting pot smokers who are not dangerous, show if anything an extra attention to detail and creativity attributes you would think a company would want. I agree heavy machinery, doctors, bus drivers should be tested but what if you are applying for a job in customer service, housekeeping or cook. Studies have proven that those work places that test are no safer statistically than those that don't so why do we continue this insanity.

If all they are doing is a urine analysis, then yes, you are correct. other tests such as blood and hair analysis can detect a plethora of other drugs, but most companies don't do that (too expensive). so, most of the time, these tests are just for show, and pretty pointless. though, i think part of the objective is to discourage drug use.

I have a job interview coming up and they told me that they drug test. Do you think that means they will want me to do a drug test right there on the spot, or most likely will I be having to go to a clinic.

Very rarely do they do it on the spot. They will have you go to a clinic, but sometimes on the same day as an interview, in my experience.

These companies test their drugs on animals first, then on humans (clinical trials), do you think that drugs should be tested on animals, or or do you think that it is necessary to do so, so there is less risk on humans?

Generally, what are your views on pharmaceutical companies and their drug testing procedures?

MD answer. Preface this by saying that I'm thinking of anti cancer drugs rather than cosmetics. And I am both an animal lover and a people lover.

I have seen people with end stage cancer volunteer for "Phase One" trials of new drugs. Phase one means we do not know the toxicity, efficacy, or the correct dosage for humans. Yet people will sign consents figuring that if it does not help them, it may be a help to someone else later on.
I always felt they were unselfish and heroic, and I hope I would do the same in that situation. None of us knows what we would do in a situation like that until faced with it.

Dale Q's answer has received some thumbs down, and that is the initial reaction I would have too - - until I thought about it. There are people who would take risks for money or to help someone or simply because they are not that concerned about living. Convicts might be used IF they volunteer. People can provide informed consent while animals can not.
No animals volunteer for these studies.

Still, if you think of the big picture, we slaughter millions of animals each year to feed us. Objections to animal testing
is like complaining about the speck in someone else's eye while we have a plank in our own. (Bible reference Matthew 7). Everyone who gets upset about animal testing had better be vegetarians or they may be hypocrites.

Yes, I know I'll get thumbs down for this. In any thoughtful debate, all angles should be considered. This is a good question with many thoughtful answers.
