if i smoked weed, and then went for a normal cholesterol blood test..would there be signs of the drug in my blood?
When testing for cholesterol they test for cholesterol only. If they want to test for other things such as "Weed" then they will have to do a specific test.
The easiest way to avoid testing positive for weed in a blood test is not to touch the damn stuff anyway.
High-density lipoprotein (HDL), also known as quot;good cholesterolquot;, can help prevent narrowing or clogged arteries by removing bad ...
the doc told me not to drink 3 days before my blood test. Really, would 1-2 beers matter? It's not like having 3 martinis the night before.
Alcohol affects how the liver clears fat from the blood. Alcohol also spurs the liver on to make more triglycerides. Even light drinking (two 4-ounce glasses of wine a week) can raise triglyceride levels.
Triglycerides are measures along with HDL, LDL and Cholesterol to work out your 'numbers'.
I have heard that one should not eat anything 8 to 12 hours prior to giving blood to check your Cholesterol levels and receiving an accurate reading. But does that include medications? Every morning I take my Blood Pressure medication along with a Vitamin D Pill, a multivitamin, and a Fish Oil Capsule. Should I NOT take any of these drugs until after my blood test, or is it ok for me to take them prior?
When fasting for a blood sugar or cholesterol test you should take nothing except water, the reasoning is simple....you don't know what fillers are put into these medications or supplements that could cause a faulty result.
Go early for the test, then take them. A couple of hours isn't going to matter but a faulty reading will.
I had one done and the doctor said nothing about fasting.
There are four components in the typical "cholesterol blood test" (which is more correctly called lipid profile):
- total cholesterol
- high-density lipoprotein (HDL): "good cholesterol"
- low-density lipoprotein (LDL): "bad cholesterol"
- triglycerides: actually NOT cholesterol (that's why the test should be called lipid profile)
Triglycerides can go up by a lot after food.
So yes, typically we ask our patients to fast 8-12 hours before having the blood drawn.
Three different references, three different answers. I guess the best answer is to ask the lab faculty before your test.....
A fasting blood test is a blood sample taken from a person who has not eaten for at least 8 hours. Usually, the blood sample is taken early in the morning.
Examples of blood tests that may be done after a period of fasting include fasting blood sugar (fasting plasma glucose) test and lipid profile (cholesterol and triglycerides).

Patients who are scheduled for a lipid profile test should fast (except for water) for 12-14 hours before the blood sample is drawn. If the patient's cholesterol is to be fractionated, he or she also should avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test. http://www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Ato z/ency/cholesterol_test.jsp
To get accurate results, you should fast for 9 to 12 hours before the test. The health care provider may advise you to stop taking drugs that can affect the test. (See "Special considerations.") You may drink water during the fast, but other beverages such as coffee, tea, or soda may affect results.

Uncovering the truth behind cholesterol
Even though many cases may be due to an inherited tendency to produce excess amounts, elevated cholesterol is often caused by an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise. Stress also plays a big role, as prolonged stress elevates a hormone called cortisol which leads to an increase in cholesterol levels. One in two Australian adults over 25 are living with high cholesterol, greatly increasing their risk of heart disease. In 2008 the National Cholesterol Test surveyed more than 500 Australians about their knowledge of cholesterol and its health implications. Over 50 per cent incorrectly believed that the majority of cholesterol comes solely from food when, in fact, the body makes most of the cholesterol it needs. Nearly half of those surveyed try and manage their cholesterol through lifestyle changes, such as diet, exercise and weight loss, but this may not always be enough to lower cholesterol to an acceptable level.
