How long does it normally take to get mouth cancer after using smokeless chewing tobacco?
Black Ooze

If somebody has a dip of chew a day and shows no signs of wear and tear from it on the gums or teeth can they get mouth cancer before the wear and tear occurs? Also how long does it normally take for somebody to get the cancer from the tobacco? I have a friend that has chewed for 3 years now and has no signs of any side effects in his mouth. Does it take 10 years 20? How long before cancer is a serious possibility? I want very educated answers or from experience. Thank you

hard to say - there are some people that are more genetically predisposed to certain cancers than others we all know some people will smoke 40 a day for 70 yrs and then die of something other than cancer.
there is an increased risk of cancer if you have smoked and i'm sure that your friend had a higher risk of mouth cancer than someone who hasn't chewed tobacco but it doesn't mean he will definately get it

The Parasite

how long would you have to chew tobacco before it became a very serious risk, such as mouth cancer

Impossible to answer. I've been chewing tobacco for 14 years and have had no issues. The best way to answer is how my dentist told me:

"Mouth cancer is the worst cancer to get, but also the hardest to get."

BTW, how am I supposed to compete with a doctor? I said the same thing as her without the mumbo jumbo ricky ticky verbage.

how come you cant get cancer from chewing tobacco?
distaste for chewing tobacco

all the smokers out there should just go smokeless. not only can you not get cancer but if u fall asleep with a lip in your mouth you wont burn the house down! thats a safer alternative right there.

Ask this guy what he thinks about the safety of going smokeless.

White spots. Keep an eye on them. If it grows over time, see a professional.
There will be pitting with white spots on the inside of the mouth.
Painful? Then it is probably quite late. Get attention immediately.

  • TommieMedia - College-aged chewing tobacco users on the rise

When it comes to talk about tobacco use, cigarettes and their dangers are typically at the forefront of the conversation. While cigarettes hog the limelight, college students find a different way to get their nicotine fix: smokeless tobacco.

Freshman Karl Tvedte said he started using smokeless tobacco his senior year of high school and hasn’t thought twice about it despite the stigma attatched to the habit.

“I like chewing … I wouldn’t say I’m embarrassed by it,” Tvdete said. “I actually think there’s more of a stigma with smoking cigarettes.”

Among college graduates aged 18 to 25, the use of smokeless tobacco increased from 2.9 percent in 2007 to 4.3 percent in 2008, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
